The Midwest Dramatists Center (MDC) is pleased to announce the third
Midwest Dramatists Conference, to take place September 26-28, 2019. MDC
is a Kansas City, Missouri-based organization and we invite play
submissions from playwrights across the country.
Industry
professionals Katrin Hilbe and Gwydion Suilebhan will serve as
adjudicators of the play readings held during the conference and conduct
workshops for the playwrights whose plays have been selected for the
conference. Katrin is a director and producer from New York and Gwydion
is a creator and founder of New Play Exchange (NPX). Additional
adjudicators will be announced on our website this summer.
We
are currently seeking 10-minute plays with no limitation on theme. Plays
must have no more than four characters, and be no more than 10 pages of
script with standard formatting. Each playwright receives a 25-minute
slot that includes their play reading and adjudicator comments. The play
must be unpublished, but previous productions or readings are
acceptable.
The deadline for submissions is June 1, 2019,
and selected playwrights will be notified on or around July 15, 2019.
There is no submission fee, and up to 45 playwrights will be selected.
One submission will be accepted per playwright, and submissions will be
closed after 500. The conference will provide actors and directors from
Kansas City’s vibrant professional theatre pool.
Conference registration is $220. Playwrights whose plays are chosen are required
to attend in order to have their plays read at the conference. In
addition to the play reading with adjudicator feedback, conference
registration includes the opening night reception, breakfast and
afternoon snacks Friday and Saturday, the Gala dinner, and breakout

This
year we are adding an exciting addendum to the conference: the Midwest
Dramatists Conference Youth (MDCY). Sunday, September 29 we will present
eight plays by local young playwrights. Conference participants are

Please send scripts to director@midwestdramatists.org
as a blind submission (no name or other identifying information) and
include a brief biography and any production history in a separate
document. Scripts that fail to follow the submission guidelines will be
disqualified.
The conference will be held at the Hilton Garden
Inn in Olathe, Kansas, 12080 S Strang Line Road. There is a special
hotel discount for artists visiting from out of town. Please let the
hotel know you are attending the conference when you call for
reservations. The local airport is Kansas City International (MCI), in
Kansas City, Missouri.
